2024 NWM Airshow (Geneseo - NY)

Thu Jul 11, 2024 4:09 pm

We are two days away! (Couldn't find another thread for the event here on WIX which I'm kind of shocked by... The old man and I will arrive Saturday afternoon to watch the show on Sunday.

I know Yankee Lady was supposed to attend but given all the issues, clearly they had to cancel. Looks to be a bigger line up than last year! Hopefully it is a sign of them trying to expand the show!

I will be on the field by 10am tomorrow and stay for Saturday' s show. This will be my first time since 2019. 2020 and 2021 were covid misses ( I am Canadian ) and the last 2 years Geneseo conflicted with WW2 Weekend in Reading. Great lineup this year. Going to be fun.

Two Tiger Moths coming from Ontario tomorrow. Should be joined by a third which is based nearby.
Hope to see you and your Dad Chris. Come say Hi!
Anyone else too! My first airshow since 2019.
I went by road to the airfield last year. The celebration of life for my dear friend Marilyn.
She's who we named our Moth after
Forecast looks pretty good.

They put on a good show with what they had. But it is impossible to forget and not compare with the days when there was so so so many great aircraft that all parking was across the street.

Only going to punish yourself by thinking back. Those days are gone. Far too many warbirds owned by far too few people. It has gotten to the point where " mom and pop" ownership is out of reach. If you want to see them you have to go to them seems to be the trend.

I was at the show yesterday and was impressed. Two things concerned me. The announcer was brutal. More mistakes then I had on my 9th grade math exam ( I failed the course).

My biggest peeve however was the massive waste of prime viewing space because of the battle re enactment. 50 foot deep area along the front of the entire crowd line. It was a lame display and could have easily been done on the air side of the front rope between that and the taxi way. I was on the airport by 7am so I was able to get front row in the exact area I wanted so it is not like I was buried 200 feet back. Come on NWM, a rethink of that is badly needed.

Overall I give the show a 7.5 out of 10. They automatically lose a point because they had more than one civilian flippyfloppy act.

Thanks to all the volunteers and the aircraft owners and pilots who did a great job.

Thanks for all the show info, looked like the weather was great.
Till I read Jeff's explanation of the front crowd line
I thought attendance was low from the videos I had seen.
Chris, thanks for the photos, all good stuff,
but I was really shocked to see all the Corsair photos.

Thanks guys. Yeah I had to take just a few photos of the Corsair of course. Not to mention somehow I missed taking any of Andy's "Marylin" or the other Tigermoths! I was told that Saturday's show had over 6,000 people attend which was more then last year's entire show combined. So I think that was a good thing for NWM. Sunday (the day we went) was considerably lighter, but we still enjoyed it all the same. Made it easier to get a pretty decent view of the show as we opted for a tailgating spot.

I didn't pay close enough attention to the announcer to see if he was saying anything incorrect. Our own Jerry O'Neill did the MC work last year (which I think he nailed) but him and his Airdales were busy at the Sacramento show that weekend this year. So they got someone else. I was more of offput by the more modern background music they were playing throughout most of the show. Including hearing the same song like 5 or 6 times as a filler for whenever no one was talking. The pre show with the L-birds and trainers was mostly peppered in with 40's era music which was nice. I just wish they continued that trend when the rest of the Warbirds were flying later in the show. I get having more modern songs during the modern aerobatics and F-22 performances. But the majority of the show is WWII.

The bivouac ground displays were nice as it seemed more showed up that were probably at Reading last year since the show was held on the same weekend. (Why they decided that I will never know). I really hope they keep the show during this weekend as is coincides with the Geneseo town events. It was also great to see a few old familiar faces in the vendor area. Last year there was, like one tent selling very basic toys that can be found at every air museum across the country. The other vendors were a welcome addition and again, I hope that expands more next year.

Not to mention I think the ground battle was a good addition, though the placement and location wasn't. I think they would be wise to possibly take inspiration from the original Thunder over Michigan layout. Where they had the large ground battle reenactment alongside the show center in the bean field to the right. See attached for my suggestion for placement for next year. I think it has great potential to be expanded upon and made to be a much larger aspect of the show.

Not to mention of course this year there was an increase in aircraft attendance over last year. We did have some drop outs. Panchito was no where to be found. The B-17 of course was a no go. Jim flew Bald Eagle in the heritage flight with the F-22 on Sunday, but then bugged out afterwards! I was surprised he didn't land even for a few hours on Sunday. That would have given us at least three P-51s on the field for a little while. The Hurricane was broke and only took off to leave on Sunday. I hope they decide to bring back the aircraft parking to the right of the main taxiway, that has been historically for the fighters and trainers. It would be great to see them focus on bringing up aircraft attendance. Even if it is somehow incentivizing private pilots to fly in their regular Cessnas, Mooneys, etc. I just simply think, if you have more aircraft on the field, more people will come.

Their are a number of air museums within a 500 mile radius of Geneseo that should be tapped for the show yearly: Though of course I understand it can be quite expensive. And with the new person heading up coordinating the event, hopefully this will be the case.

Those pictures bring back happy memories of the many airshows I attended there- 1984-2011. Glad to hear this one was a success and that the weather was good.

Whose B-25 is pictured above?
A work in progress?
Without turrets and polish or paint, it looks like a B-25 from the '60s.

I'm not criticizing, just curious as to its future plans?
I'd have thought all flying examples had been restored.
