Frank Tallman's FM-2 N90523

Thu Sep 21, 2023 10:16 am

I just added an in-depth look at the FM-2, BuNo 74056, that Frank Tallman owned from 1957 to 1960. Tallman did not use it for any film projects, but it was part of his collection at Flabob before he merged with Paul Mantz at Orange County in late 1961. Interesting stuff...the FM-2 that became the one and only Hawkeye Special type before becoming an FM-2 again.

As I recall in his book Flying the Old Planes, Tallman liked the type.

I'm looking at the table of contents for "Flying the Old Planes" and there's no listing for an F4F.

Perhaps it was in another book or article that you saw this?

I'd be interested in seeing what Tallman had to say about the type. Eric Winkle loved the plane, which kind of surprised me.

Though he may have been comparing it to contemporary British naval fighters.

It wouldn't stand a chance against an ME-109 or a FW-190

It must have been somewhere else, sorry.

Tallman had a soft spot for the less glamorous warbirds, hence his affection for the P-40 and Duck.

As far as being easy prey for the 190 and 109, probably, but never say always, history if filled with victors of "lesser" aircraft.
Sometimes it does come down to the pilots...and luck.

This is at Chino Airport at one of the airshows. You'll note the POF P-38 behind and their home made stanchions for supporting the ropes. The hills in the background (as well as the haze) are also consistent with Chino on the ramp south of the control tower.
