No Reno updates?

Fri Sep 15, 2023 9:22 am

Not really in the know, but stuff I have heard: (those that do FacePlant probably know a lot more)

Dreadnaught swallowed an intake valve and blew out the whole induction section, taking a master rod bearing along with it. Going home on a truck.

The Bardahl Special sounds just as good as Strega and Voodoo used to. No surprise, as both planes were significantly cannibalized to build her up. Section 3 is calling the plane “Stregoo”.

As far as I know, I got the last official $39 t-shirt. You can order online or buy a 2022 model for $35 (!!!)

Not a lot of lead changes yesterday - Gold races first time Today. Website has all of the
Details

Cheers!

Stregoo - LOL - I like it... I've also seen her referenced as "Bardoo"... Today's races will see Brent Hisey in Miss America start at the back of the pack in the bronze race and will attempt to race his way back up to the gold race after the team had to bring in a replacement heat exchanger and I understand it was installed yesterday afternoon and a test flight was done early this morning so hopefully Doc will be back in the hunt and give Stevo and "Bardahl" some competition...

On Friday, Miss A ran away with the bronze as expected. Replaced heat exchanger working well. Stevo ran away with the Gold as expected. If all goes as planned, they will meet in the gold final on Sunday. A real shame they haven’t gone head to head yet. Miss A never did qualify, so we really won’t see if she’s close until tomorrow.

Update from the Sanders pit is that a master rod bearing began to fail causing a backfire in the 500 MPH fuel/air stream which blew out the induction section. Prop and outer wing panels will come off and she’ll sit in a 45-degree cradle on a flatbed for the ride to Ione. I guess the guys from Anderson Airmotive were waiting in the pit with clipboards and order forms when they towed her in. :-) Argonaut and 924 are running 2 & 3 with no challenge expected today.

Repeat of yesterday today. Miss America will start tail end Charlie in the gold tomorrow, but should be in second by the time they hit the guide pylon. Hope for another safe day tomorrow

I might have mis-read this but I believe that Doc had 1 or 2 penalties in yesterday's race which dropped him to last place in the silver so today he will once again start last in the silver finals.. I also seen that someone over on AAFO.com said there is no bumping up on the day of finals - only in heat races so if that's true then the best Doc and " Miss America" can do is win the unlimited silver championship...

Unfortunately no misread. He broke the crowd line and can’t even fly today

It is my understanding that the entire team and Miss A herself have been disqualified, so they cannot use another pilot. Sad, she was looking good.

I hope I'm misunderstanding or misinterpreting, but I was watching the live Reno feed on YouTube, when it cut away following the T-6 Gold race. I found another unofficial feed, and whoever is broadcasting seems to believe there was a crash, and is expressing doubt the races will continue. He believes two aircraft went down outside the airport fence line.

From the Reno Air Racing Assn. Facebook Page:

"It is with great sorrow that the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) announces that around 2:15 p.m. this afternoon, at the conclusion of the T-6 Gold race, upon landing, two planes collided and it has been confirmed that both pilots are deceased. The RARA Board of Directors and the T-6 class president are working to notify next of kin and ensure families have all of our support. There were no civilian injuries and we’re in the process of confirming additional details around the incident. Additional information will be released as soon as it is available. All racing operations are currently suspended.
Safety is the foremost concern of RARA and we work year-round to host the safest event possible. As we always do, we are cooperating with the National Transportation Safety Board, the FAA and all local authorities to identify the cause of the accident and ensure that all of our pilots, spectators and volunteers have the necessary support during this time."

Names have been released, "RARA identified the pilots as Nick Macy and Chris Rushing." The aircraft involved was Baron's Revenge and Six-Cat.

Heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and those affected by this tragedy.

Very sad - to have this happen when both pilots should have been celebrating. Fortunate that no one on the ground was injured, as the crash site was pretty residential. Only bright side I can find. Blue skies to both men and condolences to friends and family
