IJN Akagi wreck exploration happening now (9/10/23)

The sunken WWII aircraft carrier Akagi (Japanese flagship at the Battle of Midway) has been identified and the first video documentation of its wreckage is happening now (Sept 10th 2023). Check out the live stream at the link below ...

This was absolutely fascinating - seeing her come into focus literally sent chills all over. The significance of this find cannot be overstated.

The view of the chrysanthemum on the bow was just - I dunno, it's hard to put into words. This was the lead ship in the attack on Pearl Harbor - this is the ship Dick Best hit - there's just so much HISTORY tied up in this one ship.

A huge, huge well done to the entire Nautilus team!

The ship's name was painted over, which is a curious detail:

This is the thing that really got me - the Imperial chrysanthemum is still there, but either overpainted or overgrown.

I can only imagine the reaction of the Japanese to seeing this nearly mythical ship after 81 years.
