So interesting to see. My uncle was in the Marines and was at Pearl Harbor during the attack. He was on board the Yorktown for the Battle of the Coral Sea and at Midway. Fortunately he survived the sinking. He was wounded later in the war during the island hopping campaigns and was out of the war after that. Don't know which battle. He lived to be 82.

Are there plans to get to the Akagi as well?

The previous expedition (using RV Petrel) obtained photos by deep sea submersible of Kaga, but not for Akagi.

It would be nice if they could find the Soryu as well. Ships around Soryu after the sinking recorded a major explosion (some of the ships thought that they themselves might have been torpedoed). With the Soryu being smaller and not as ruggedly built, my guess is that ship may now exist as widely dispersed fragments.

Yes. The investigation just wrapped up a few hours ago and captured some very powerful imagery.

Thank you kindly Russ. After Paul Allen passed I was fearful we wouldn’t see anymore exploration of this type of history. I was so pleasantly surprised to see this happening when you posted the link. I’ve been watching steadily from my office for the past two days. For many of us who are serious historians, this type of thing is our Super Bowl!.

Absolutely amazing to watch the exploration of extraordinary ships. Tremendous history unfolding right in front of us who are watching.

Yeah, I'm gonna echo those thanks - I had ZERO idea this was even happening until I happened to click over here. I'm really bummed I missed the Yorktown dive, but was absolutely glued to the screen when they came upon Akagi... to be one of the first to see her after 81 years was incredibly moving.

Thanks Russ - this has been great to watch - amazing that the survey team has the patience (3.5 miles above) to figure out where the submersible is and what part of the ship they are looking at.

I am reminded watching this of my own weaknesses and grateful for the reminder I need to do better. I caught myself thinking, while the survey team (rightly so) reverences the Akagi wreck site, "Remember these sailors and pilots were the same ones that decimated Pearl Harbor and not innocent sailors out for a pleasure cruise in the Pacific".
