"Clipped" wing T-33 for sale on GSA

Hi,
just thought I'd post the link to a "clipped" wing T-33 that is being auctioned off on the GSA website. Currently at the Yankee Air Museum.
Too far away for me, otherwise I'd be really tempted !

If the aircraft was civilian-owned, registered with the FAA, and has an N number. Why is it Government Auction? It can't be government owned?

I do not know the particulars of this airframe, but a good number of display airframes at public and private museums and places like VFW chapters, etc. are on loan from the US Government, and as part of the lend agreement if the custodian is no longer able to care of the artifact, or it is surplus to their requirements, it reverts to the US govt for disposition. Perhaps the title was not quite as clear as implied in the "sold to" reference above.

That seems to have been a rule back when these planes went to training schools - I remember a caption on a photo of a civilian-painted T-33 at a technical college in Air Classics in the mid-70s, saying "Even though these aircraft are never to fly again, the USAF requires an N-number be registered for them. Perhaps this is to keep a record of where the aircraft are."
