Vintage Aviation Logbooks

Sun Sep 11, 2022 6:08 pm

In a new entry in the "Vintage" document series (Army Air Forces Aeronautical and Cloth Charts, Vintage Books and Periodicals, Vintage Aviation Artwork and Prints) and as a follow on to the government document form threads (Army Air Forces and Other World War II Forms, US Navy Aircraft History Card Requests, US Navy Aircraft History Cards) it seems time to start a thread dedicated to digitized aircraft and pilot log books or associated materials.

First, personal log books:

Person - Dates - Title (Book Number) - Designation - Publisher - Institution

Next, other log books - including aircraft, equipment, and unit:

Aircraft/Equipment/Unit - Date - Title - Designation - Publisher - Institution

Third, a couple advertisements for log books:

Finally, on the subject of log books, the Logbook Project is worth checking out.[1]

Thanks for the interesting links. A British resource, the Maidenhead Heritage Centre, commemorates the pilots of Air Transport Auxiliary who ferried aircraft for the RAF. This is a link to a large collection of digitized logbooks:

Thanks! I'll have to get around to listing those eventually. In the meantime, here's a few more:

Person - Dates - Title (Book Number) - Designation - Publisher - Institution (Cont.)

"Eventually" has come:

Person - Dates - Title (Book Number) - Designation - Publisher - Institution (Cont.)

A few notes:
  • All of the above come from a page on the Maidenhead Heritage Centre website.
  • If a single book was split into two parts, then the links appear at the end of the entry.

Lastly, I came across another, far larger, collection at the International Bomber Command Centre. (Searching for "Log Book" produces a whopping 3,985 results!) So I don't think I'll get around to those any time soon!
