Go to YouTube and a search for The First Fighters in New Guinea. It's a National Archives film. At 4:46 into the film you can see maintenance men working on a replacement wing in RAF insignia for a P-400.

Thank you for posting. It actually shows Jack Welch standing around , goofing off and we can get a sense of what kind of guy he was in his youth. Sadly, when Hoover, Yeager, Anderson and others talk about the roads at Muroc being named for their friends, he was one of those test pilots lost.
Also, it’s a shame he got stuck flying the P-39/ P-400 for a while. No telling how much higher his ace status would’ve been.

Keep in mind that through the early years of WWII the RAF roundel was common to all nations of the British Commonwealth. It wasn't until 1942 that Australia and NZ (as well as the USA) modified their insignia by removing the red dot.

Keep in mind that through the early years of WWII the RAF roundel was common to all nations of the British Commonwealth. It wasn't until 1942 that Australia and NZ (as well as the USA) modified their insignia by removing the red dot.

That thought crossed my mind too, most RAAF P400's and P39's flew with the later style roundel but there are just a couple of pics floating around on the net of freshly arrived P400's with RAF/RAAF syle early roundels.

I've seen a few pics of P-39Fs that were turned over to the RAAF with the appropriate insignia but never an AAF P-400 in RAF insignia newly delivered in Australia. But as that photo shows, some must have arrived that way.

I should have noted that the RAAF P-39s were used in Australia, not New Guinea. I don't think there's any question that it's a P-400 in the photo.
