Only helicopter built by the Cessna Aircraft Company ...

Thu Feb 20, 2020 4:16 pm

The Cessna CH-1 Skyhook is the only helicopter ever built by the Cessna Aircraft Company. It was the first helicopter to land on the summit of Pike's Peak and the last piston-engined helicopter to set the helicopter altitude record. The CH-1 had a single, two-bladed main rotor, and a front-mounted reciprocating engine which gave the aircraft a stable center of gravity (CG). Its semi-monocoque airframe greatly resembles its light airplane siblings built by Cessna. The CH-1 was named Skyhook for the civil market, similar to the marketing names used in the Cessna single engine airplane line, such as Skyhawk, Skylane and Skywagon.[2] The United States Army designated the CH-1C as the YH-41 Seneca. While the CH-1 achieved several helicopter firsts and set a world record, it never became a commercial or military success.

During the 1960s, the US Government supposedly transferred a number of Seneca Helicopters to Guatemala.

These were not destined for Guatemala, but seemingly were bound for Ecuador.

This information was provided to me, a long, long time ago by Mr. Mario Overall, from www.laahs.com :

Cessna UH-14A Seneca 63-9793 c/n 45529 USAF FAG ???
Cessna UH-14A Seneca 62-5845 USAF FAG ???
Cessna UH-14A Seneca 62-5846 USAF FAG ???
Cessna UH-14A Seneca 62-5847 USAF FAG ???
Cessna UH-14A Seneca 62-5848 USAF FAG ???
Cessna UH-14A Seneca 62-12350 c/n 45526 USAF FAG ???

Any additional information on these, is welcome.

When I was in 5th grade I checked out a book on helicopters from the Bookmobile. It had a photo of a CH-1 and I have liked that helo ever since.

Interesting. Looks like the drive shaft would be right in the middle of the cabin!

How was Collective and Cyclic control achieved? Was it a version of Hafner's 'spider' through the centre of the mast?

Very interesting post, Mark and excellent views of the military version of the Cessna helicopter. A guy called Steve Remington (R.I.P sadly) in Santa Barbara featured it in his COLLECTAIR blog/webpage which has somehow survived his death. http://collectair.org/cessna.html He was an engineer at Cessna on that program as a young man. (I had connected with him via his interest in Woodason Aircraft Models at Heston Airport, London)
