Tail Wheel Tire Needed

Mon Nov 14, 2016 3:34 pm

Hi All
We are getting very close to flying our 1943 Fairchild UC-61K / RAF Argus III.
I have run into a small problem trying to find a tail wheel tire and tube.
This is not the standard Fairchild F24 / PT-19 unit. ( If you have an extra one, let me know- it may be needed)

My plane was one of a very small batch sent to RAF without tail wheel and strut assembly. A "British" Trailing Link/ Self Centering unit was installed (still trying to find out who made it) and it has a 4.00-3 1/2 tire (tyre) and wheel. (Also used on some marks of the Spitfire and other RAF aircraft) Our Wheel is in great shape, but I can not find a tire or tube in NEW or flight worthy condition.

Is there anyone out there in WIX World that can assist?

If you think you can help with the STRUT Assembly, PM me with email address and I will send pictures and all info I have.

thanks
JIM C.

Years ago, in the eightys , I was having trouble finding a tail wheel tire and tube for my stearman. Someone, another stearman owner said to try the front tire from a snapper mower,( the one that looks like a go cart) . I bought tire and tube for a fraction of the price of a Goodyear brand they sold for a stearman . It worked perfectly and was still on the plane when I sold it.

Oh dear.

Did I just read a recommendation on using a lawnmower wheel on a aircraft......?

No, just the tire or tube.
Big difference.
What's the T-O and landing speed of a Fairchild.....40-50?
I'm guessing that a heavy duty tire made for a heavy-duty lawn mower as described, would be up to the job.
Of course the FAA may have other ideas.

I would recommend that if one were to go this route, which may prove quite safe and satisfactory, that one not post about it on the internet

Have you tried Dessler?

For a new tailwheel assembly, you could try The Fairchild Club.
