Do-335, He-219, etc. at the NASM Annex (pics)

I went out to the Udvar-Hazy Center this morning and was surprised once again by new stuff.

This time I got to see their Dornier Do-335 for the first time, and I got some pictures of the He-219 fuselage that I posted about a few months ago.

They've rearranged some of the aircraft, and the German stuff is now clustered together.

Great pictures! I wish the NASM would update their web site with new pictures of the aircraft as displayed. The picture they have of the P-38 is old stock file photo (and not even of the actual aircraft). The picture of the Winnie Mae is ancient!. I haven't seen one picture of the Winnie Mae in the new museum yet (this plane belongs in the milestones of flight gallery downtown - in my opinion).

A great thing about the Udvar-Hazy facility is that it's not necessary to go near DC. The museum is adjacent to Dulles Airport in N. Virginia. (In fact, it's built on land owned by the airport.) No DC crap!

You could fly into Dulles and grab a cab. I'm guessing a few bucks only for the fare. I've seen people doing it while on a layover.

I was really jazzed about the German stuff, but I took a few pictures of some other stuff, too.

The NASM does receive alot of criticism (sometimes justified) here on the WIX over not restoring for display the B-17 "Swoose", the B-25, the P-61, the Avenger, the Mosquito etc., etc., etc. but I must say they have done a very good job in just 2 years placing aircraft on display at Udvar Hazy. My 2 cents worth.

I say, don't worry about restoring them (for the time being). Just assemble them and display them in their current state (no matter how bad). When they can be put into restoration, remove them one at a time from display at that point. This allows the older generation to see the planes of their time (i.e. the Swoose) before it's to late. It should also alleviate storage space issues (store them on display). I don't need the Swoose fully restored to appreciate it. Just my opinion......

Richard W., Is the P-61 Black Widow on display yet? Someone here on the WIX said recently it was soon to go on display.

Pat- No the P-61 isn't on display, yet. I'm not certain where they'll put it, as there doesn't seem to be enough room on the floor. I suppose they might hang it from the ceiling, which might be cool with the gear up and the right angle.

You make a good point, APG85.

I remember seeing many of these aircraft in 1980 when I toured the Silver Hill restoration facility. They were mostly in pieces, spread out on the floor, but what a thrill it was to to see them in any condition.

I recall standing up in the Enola Gay's bomb bay, and the "Swoose" was outside for some reason exposed to the elements (might have been in transit from building to building?)

I've got some good slides of it all that I've been meaning to have digitized so I can share them.

The Do.335 is my favourite Axis aircraft but seening it next to the Ar.234, I never realised just how big she is!

When the wings are attached to the He-219, my second favourite while then be on full display!
