The airplane fragmented upon impact with the water. The engine, propeller, both wings, pieces of the fuselage, and a majority of the empennage were recovered; the remainder of the wreckage was not recovered.

It would be a high priority to A) recover the bodies B) recover as much as possible of the components for the FAA's accident investigation. I did read where the P-40 that crashed in the Atlantic a few years ago was not recovered.
