Sat May 21, 2016 11:41 am

I had heard a Martin Maryland or Baltimore had been found somewhere (Africa?). Anyone have more info on this?

This was discussed by DaveM2 of Classic Wings magazine almost a year ago. There is a picture in this topic.

Hope that helps.

Half a dozen neutron bombs in close proximity to the Maryland likely wouldn't bother it much. :axe:

...some grousing and grumbling to wade through but there's some info here. I hope its true and its eventually recovered.

A closer look at the Maryland picture shows white (assuming modern) buildings in the background. It may be near an existing military base, but no indication which one. My understanding is that everything East of the capital is controlled by rival militia factions and ISIS. Much of Libya is ungoverned now so its a very dangerous place.

Some conjecture on my part:
Two possibilities: If additional media attention is focused on its recovery, it may become a tempting way for Islamist sympathizers to entice Westerners to a trap. Or alternatively, focusing attention to it, resulting in it being destroyed for being a Western object.

One thing that concerned me was that the pic is the possibility the pic was circulated to entice westerners to Libya to a trap. That's a pretty wild conspiracy idea but western reporters have been enticed only to be captured in the past. Any of these might explain the silence since the photo was published.

There's some indications in the media recently that the US military may be stepping up its special forces in Libya as part of the effort to destroy ISIS. So its about to get hotter.

The wreck is not in Libya

No doubt a secret to:
-prevent it from being looted by locals
-seized and sold to the highest bidder
-kept a secret so those in the know can feel extra special...:)

That should always be #1 on that list.
So many people love keeping this stuff secret for no other reason that they simply can do so and feel like they know something others do not.

While that is often the case, this time it really is worth keeping the location secret, in my opinion.

I agree. Until it can be recovered and gotten to a safe place, the more unknown and unidentified it is, the safer it is. Imagine what condition the Egyptian P-40 would be in had it remained unannounced and been quietly spirited out of the desert instead of being pounced on and almost destroyed by the mob of jackals that showed up in their taxicabs when someone broadcast it's existence and location.

...and still others demand that people violate their hard earned trust for no other reason that they feel entitled to know things that others do.

I'm just glad that there is one out there.....someone knows it's there and there's a good possibility it may be salvaged in the future. Until then....fingers crossed.

The Maryland stays where it is, until someone can come up with some of the host countries antiquities which reside in foreign museums to trade.

The only tangible efforts made to recover it were by the RAF Museum, who struggled for some time, offering surplus and appropriate machines in exchange - there was no way any of the UK museums were going to hand over antiquities. The RAFM approached relevant US museums / companies for help - none were interested in a practical sense.
Anyhoo, a change in RAFM management saw the effort abandoned.....
