Still sad.......

For all the sweat and money put in by those who worked to make it a flyer......

In the end Pima is a great place and we will see it completed.

Wow, fantastic. So cool to see the original QECs installed. I think when complete, she'll be the most accurate Privateer around. Now if only they could backdate the cockpit framing.

Sigh... and to think, we could have seen this beauty in the air alongside Thunderbird, perhaps on an extended ride-tour program like Collings. Ah well.

jamesintucson, thanks a million for the update and please keep 'em coming! It's gratifying to see so much progress being made so quickly. I'm also disappointed she won't fly, but always believed flightworthy status for this bird was rather a long shot, even for LSFM. Any plans for the cockpit framing and/or interior?

Are there any more sets of those original cowlings left? I wonder if they could be duplicated in fiberglass for the other static display Privateers.

Chris,

Back before Hawkins and Powers Aviation liquidated and auctioned off their assets, there were PILES of the original 1830 cowlings at the Greybull airport.

I can remember quite a few still had faded blue paint, some were bare, while others were faded red, (probably airtanker livery before H&P converted the Privateers over to the 2600s). They were laying everywhere behind the east-west portion of the "Bull Pen" out back. I can remember one in particular was yellow and brown with red trim and I was always curious which Privateer that might of come off of, but nobody seemed to know.

They were situated in with the 2600 bull rings/cowlings, C-119 and KC-97 cowlings, etc. That particular area behind the Bull Pen was the designated cowling area.

I was always curious who bought all of the 1830 cowlings. There had to have been around two dozen laying out there. I'm not sure, but I think someone bought them before the auction, but I don't know who.

That looks absolutely fantastic, and I must admit a twinge of regret that we won't get to see this amazing aircraft in the skies. Pima is doing a TREMENDOUS job with it, and it's great to see one back in it's mid-1945 configuration.
