C-97 TOs sought

Mon Feb 22, 2016 7:33 pm

As most of you know, were undergoing our certification of the C-97 to flight status.

Almost done now.

However I need the following information:

1C-97-540 This document pertains to reworking the spar slice bolt holes. The AD that relates to this is AD-56-01-02 for the B-377

1C-97-530 This document pertains to replacing the Prop Manual Control circuit breaker. The AD that relates to this is AD-55-09-01

Anything in the archives anyone?

Thanks

Do you know of Bob Gruenhaggen (spelling may be incorrect)? He was our Maintenance Officer at 181st ARS in Dallas when we had KC-97's. I can do some snooping and find his contact if you want.

Here is the basic text from 55-09-01:

55-09-01 BOEING: Applies to all Model 377 aircraft with Hamilton Standard Propellers.
To be accomplished as soon as practicable but not later than June 30, 1955.
Loss of manual r.p.m. control can occur as a result of tripping of the fast-acting magnetic circuit breaker before the slow-acting fuse is blown on a faulted branch. Improved circuit protective coordination and resultant reliability in the manual control function should be provided by replacing the "Manual" 10-ampere magnetic circuit breaker with a 5-ampere thermal type breaker, and replacing the four 5-ampere fuses in the synchronizer unit with 2 ampere Slo-Blo fuses.
(Hamilton Standard Service Bulletin No. 283 dated December 21, 1953, covers this same subject.)

And for 56-01-02:
56-01-02 BOEING: Applies to All model 377 Aircraft.
Compliance required as indicated.
As a result of cracks discovered at wing spar splice bolt holes the following inspection and possible rework is required.
At the next basic check period and subsequent thereto, at each basic check period but not to exceed an interval of 2,500 hours flight time, the No. 1 bolt hole in each rear spar Station 246 joint and Nos. 1 and 6 bolt holes in each front and rear spar Station 510 joints shall be carefully inspected by use of borescope or equivalent method.
If cracks are found, the splice should be reworked in accordance with instructions contained in Boeing Service Letter No. 289.
Within the next 500 flight hours, unless recently accomplished, the outboard bolt holes in each front and rear spar Station 47.75 joints shall be inspected for cracks by use of borescope or equivalent method. If cracks are found, they shall be repaired in accordance with Boeing Instructions.
This supersedes AD 55-23-01.

The complete texts are not online, but it should not be a problem to get copies from OKC.

Right. But the trouble is, we are not a B-377.

These AD's were included in USAF TO's mentioned in the OP.

I need the original TO's to satisfy our FAA.

I was able to get in touch with Bob Gruenhagen. He has your contact info and will be in touch in a few days. He is involved in activities as an election judge right now in TX.

He first suggested the "Guppie" contractor for NASA. He also mentioned National archives and someone at Tinker AFB.

Thanks.

I contacted Boeing, The Air Force History Office, Tinker AFB. Who is the Guppy contractor for NASA?

Aero Spacelines built the Guppies.
NASA was the operator.
