Nearby homeowners described engine sputtering after several diving maneuvers.

I wouldn't put much stock into the sputtering comments just yet. He may have pulled the power back, and the witnesses actually heard the Merlin popping instead of sputtering. All Merlins snap, crackle, and pop loudly when you pull the power off.

I fondly remember seeing this Mustang at a show in NY years ago. Awesome paint scheme.

The passenger is a friend to many, and I am asking everyone to please not identify him here at this time. We are all reaching out to each other to pass this tragic news as gently as we can. My heartfelt sympathy to the families. Jerry, my condolence's to you and your family. Never got a chance to meet the pilot/owner but took these at Copperstate last October.
