Metal Covered P-51 Elevators - when introduced

Fri Jan 08, 2016 9:35 am

Does anyone know at exactly what stage the fitting of metal covered elevators in place of fabric covered units was introduced on the Californian and Texas P-51D production lines? Trying to nail down which serial blocks came off the line with fabric and which with ally skinned elevators. Anyone have any details?

Many thanks

Perfect, thank you.

With regard to the Australian Mustangs, were these fabric of metal? Could it have been that the batch of NAA manufactured parts sent across to Australia were fabric covered, while their own CAC locally manufactured version were metal covered?

RAAF Mustang Order No. 29, 5th March 1946, advises "This modification is to be incorporated in Mustang aircraft with R.A.A.F. serial numbers A68-1 to A68-60 inclusive with the exception of A68-38. Subsequent aircraft will be modified prior to issue to the Service.".
