Just read a source that claims military C-46s flew with two pilots, a radioman and a flight engineer. I believe this is wrong--that they did use a radio operator but not a F/E. Correct?

My "bible",
U.S. Military Aircraft since 1909 by Swanborough and Bowers, says they had a 4 person crew.

Forgive my ignorance, but could they be referring to the crew chief for the flight engineer? Seems I've read that even some C-47's had a 4 man crew listed in the same manner. B-17's had crew chiefs flying as a "engineer/gunner" as well. I could be wrong, but maybe that's what they're referring to. Just a thought.
