Wow, sad news. I'm a big fan of Ice Pilots NWT. I'm really glad to hear that no one was seriously injured. I hope the Commando can be salvaged and doesn't end up being uneconomical to repair.

She is toast. If you look at the damage to the underside of the nose it is really bad.Very expensive to repair not to mention the busted gear and the engines and props.

Noble bird and typical American of the future. Work until you die. So sad yet impressive at the same time.

I don't know, Hang, what do you mean "she is toast?" Too damaged to fly, or too damaged to put on display?

This looks like a grand opportunity for a museum to pick her up at a decent cost. We've worked on worse.

Unfortunately it's worse than the first picture makes it look.

When the NTSB first became available online, I went back to 1960 -1963 years and reviewed some of the months from those years. They were losing about a C-46 a month to such accidents. It explained to me where they all went. Now there are maybe 5 flying worldwide (just a guess). Attrition will slowly claim those eventually. Neat old airplane.

Thanks for the links. Everything is repairable, however I don't think they will spend the money required.
