...why they call them "Bush Planes".

This is a 1944 Noorduyn Norseman, returning to base with a load of clients and their catch. Shot from a Cessna 180 floatplane with the door removed. This was done July 2005, at the Norseman Festival in Red Lake, northern Ontario.

Nice contrast with the background. You usually don't see them against a huge wall of spruce.

I have to say though, I'm kinda disappointed that there is nothing strapped to the floats, like a moose, or a boat, or a four wheeler, or a bulldozer..........

I was in Alaska last month and spent a few enjoyable hours one day watching float planes coming in and out of Juneau. I must have a couple hundred shots of them coming in and out...
Of course I imagined this one as a U-6A:

Nice pic! I'm a big fan of the Norseman. Would love to see one flying in USAAF or RCAF markings someday.

So would I. The Norseman is a really fascinating airplane. Norseman owners and maintainers like to brag that while Beavers and Otters have "whole books" of ADs that have to be complied with the older Norseman airframes have one.

Speaking of floatplanes, when in the Cessna 180 it was great fun to stick my head out of the missing door and watch the floats and rushing water as we took off and landed on those lakes.

Great plane.

I was recently reading a book about Fokker, it seems that Mr. Noorduyn was manager with the US arm of that firm and designed the well-known "Universal" which saw considerable use in Canada as a bush plane.

According to the great folks at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, it's pronounced "NOR-dine." I had always wondered myself. If you're ever in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, I highly recommend a visit to the museum.
