Richard Bong Veterans Historical Center

Spent last weekend in Ashland, WI., one afternoon we took a quick ride to Superior to visit the museum. They have an outstanding display of exhibits, way more than I expected. We only had an hour so it was rushed but well worth the trip! Highly recommended if you are in the area. Some pics of the P-38:

Awesome! Is this a real P-38 or a replica?

A real one. Back in the late 60s my dad was DCM for the F-106 group at Duluth, at the request of the locals, they painted it every few years.

She's real, and a pretty cool story of saving her. as stated above the MN Guard restored it a while back. She had sat in front of the Poplar, WI High School for many years. There was a lot of damage and vandalism and eventually she was placed on a pole. The museum was built, she was fixed up again and place there. They also have his Medal of Honor there, really humbling to see.

What's the story of what I presume is the Allison engine?

The heavily corroded engine is a merlin if I recall reading correctly. I belive it was found in the European theater. The prop is believed to be from a German aircraft. Going by memory here so I could be WAY off!...
The Museum website has much more including an NOS Allison engine still in it's shipping crate with paperwork!
