F-105 paint scheme color

Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:22 pm

I posted this in the model section and didn't get a reply, so I thought I'd open it up to the general membership...

I'm painting a non-camo F-105...a Topping desk model blank (they made them is silver and camo, and I already have a camo aircraft).
What color is the spine on silver aircraft?
Is it the same color as the anti-glare panel?
Is it OD, SEA Dark green or something else?

A paint number (either a NSN or a model paint code) would be greatly appreciated.

It's odd that it had that paint when the F-100/single seat 101s/104 were just bare metal, as was the F-84Fs which had a similar spine.
Anyone know why Republic painted the spines?

This guy used "darkened" FS34087 olive drab for his model. Looks to be well researched, the spine and anti glare panel sure looks the part in olive drab and matches the color photo from the time period. Definitely looks olive compared to the black of the radome.

Looks like some great references on that site as well- one promising site near the bottom of the above link can be clicked.

Roger Jackson absolutely knows his way around the Thud... I'd even consider Model Master 34086, the darker OD, but that's a personal preference. Tamiya's Olive Drab is also a very good paint which would be appropriate for the anti-glare and spine.
