Chinese Aviation Museum Galleries

Hello All,

I’ve finally had the chance to wade through and organize my photos from a 2007 visit to China. I was fortunate to work in China for a 4 month period that took me to 7 different cities. Back then, there wasn’t a lot of info on museums in China so I ended up on a number of detective missions to track them down. As you’ll read in the gallery descriptions, I tenaciously worked the clues and used available technology to track down what I could. In the intervening years, many of the locations are now not only, common knowledge, but some have been moved, rebuilt or added to. I put the galleries below together mostly for my own amusement and memories, but thought the warbird world might be interested in the gallery time capsules and adventures engaged in. It was a huge amount of fun to run about in a totally foreign country using maps, a few websites (mostly all in Chinese), hello and thank you as my sole Chinese language skills, rumors, lots of walking, Google Satellite view, and lots of gumption and blind luck to find airplanes. The Chinese people were generous and gracious to this crazy foreigner and it was an amazing experience.

Also, at the time, I had NO idea where to look for a data plate and missed my chance to be the first to ID the Beijing P-61 - an honor later accomplished by a fellow WIXer and traveler.

Awesome pics, thanks for posting!
The B-29 looking plane with turboprops (Tupolev Tu-4 I'm guessing) really made made me do a double take, those engines are WAY out there!

Any word on the P-61? Last I knew it was disassembled and brought inside?

It is my understanding that the entire Beijing Aviation Museum at Beihing University has been moved into a newly constructed building and most of the planes I saw in a rough shape, given a makeover - at least cosmetically. I hope to one day get back over there and see the new facility and also revisit the China Aviation Museum in Datangshang to see the changes there as well. If I don't get back, at least I had the chance to see what I saw.

Didn't know there was a display in Shanghai. I'll have to look for it next time I'm there.

BDK - There were no aircraft at the Nanjing Cemetery, just the monument, figures and marble slabs with names.

The Shanghai museum is certainly worth checking out!

This caught my eye. A Russian built Lisunov Li-2 being made to look like an American C-47. Any idea what the story is behind it?

I was able to make a visit to the Shanghai museum a couple of weeks ago, so I'll add some photos to this thread.

The middle photo is about the worst representation of a B-25 model I've ever seen in a museum... 4-bladed props even!

The model claims to be both a "BOEWG-777" and an "AIRBUS INOUS TRIE" on the upper fuselage!
