Tillamook Mauler status?

Thu Feb 12, 2015 8:33 pm

Does anyone know if the AM-1 will be made airworthy for its move? If so, I hope its very well documented. To me, this would be the warbird story of the year.

The last word that I heard in November was that the Mauler will be trucked over to Madras for display in the new museum. I'm in Florida at the moment, but I'll be back in Oregon in April. I seriously doubt that the plan has changed, but the airplane may be in Madras by that time. When I get back home, I'll post whatever I find out once I'm sure of the accuracy of the information.

Thanks very much, Larry. I look forward to your information when you get back to Oregon.

Is the museum in Tillamook still open?

I believe it has even trucked over to Madras.

Yes, although there isn't much there currently. Mini Guppy, F-14, A-7 to name a few. An employee said they intend to remain open and are planning on adding airframes.

I wondered about some of the USN stuff and what would happen to them as I couldn't imagine them being trucked to Madras.
That building is simply too cool to close to the public.
And if you ever go there, stand just inside the main door and look straight up to the top edge. Someone hung a basketball hoop way up there. I've always wonder how the heck they even got it that high...

I finally got a chance to take a few pictures of the Mauler in the Madras Museum. Sorry about the delay, but I've had an interesting time since Late April when I learned that I had Intermediate Prostate Cancer. The key word here being "had". After a biopsy, I was diagnosed on 22 April. I found out the next day that the only way that the FAA would pass me on a flight physical would be if I had radical prostatectomy surgery. That took place on 8 June and was completely successful with no spread to the lymph nodes, which were also removed. I had the robotic surgery, which I highly recommend to anyone who has to endure procedure. I had only 5 small incisions parallel with my navel rather than the large incision and all that goes with it when the conventional surgery is used. At any rate, I'm healing and could probably go back to work now in a normal fire season, but I'll need more time this year. I'm not quite ready for a string of up to twelve consecutive 14 hour duty days with up to 8 hours of wrestling with a DC-7 in the smoke and 100 degree temps. Maybe later.

Anyway, here are some shots taken within the last week. There is a rumor that the airplane could eventually be returned to flyable status. I'd like to see (and hear) that.

Nice photos. I love how well lit the museum is.

"If" it was restored to flight, how complete is it? Are all the flight control innards still intact?, is the cockpit complete?, are hydraulics still in place? Externally she looks complete but its the "guts" of an airplane that would make it viable. Nice pix by the way and thanks. :drink3:

It was pretty complete when NEAM rescued it from Aberdeen back in the 1970's. Unless there is some serious corrosion to the main structure, with enough cash, it could be made airworthy.

Larry - Thank you very much for following up with the pictures. And most of all, thank goodness you are okay health-wise.

Do you know why the Mauler is no longer on their website listing of museum aircraft? Other statics such as the P-39 are on there, so the list is not just the flyable aircraft.

I hope the rumor of returning it to airworthy is true and occurs as soon as possible. That beast needs to be back in the air where she belongs.
