Hellcat Crash on Mt Baldy

Sat Nov 12, 2005 1:57 pm

A few years back while working at Chino I was told that there is a fairly well known Hellcat crash site on Mt. Baldy. Does anyone have any info on this crash site and are you able to see it from the air at what altitude. I was told by a co-worker that some of the guys from Chino had actually hiked to it.

Actually I think it was a flight of Hellcats that crashed, not just one.

Can you see the crash site from the air? I would like to fly over it and try to find it if I can (just to say I did it). Flying in Socal is kinda new to me and it is kind of fun to go find all the different stuff from the air.

Stumac,
They were 2 Marine Corps Hellcats. Here's a page on them...

A wreck site of various SoCal wrecks for you to peruse and target for
flyovers....don't forget to check-out their links-page.

You might try contacting those folks to get an idea from them on how
much remains visible from the air. They've done the footwork.

Just some parts, mostly from the empennage (unless something has changed that I'm not aware of). They recovered parts that I know about were carried out by hand. Parts of the aircraft have slid down the hill since the time of the crash. Pretty rugged up at the top of the mountain I hear. The Sierra club probably threw the rest away if there isn't anything there now.
