Interesting Invader story

Sat Dec 06, 2014 11:39 am

This is a recently completed cartoon of mine, and based on a true story. The client was a Korean War veteran who flew night interdiction missions, strafing and fire-bombing convoys at low level among the mountains of North Korea with his B-26 Invader. He asked me to illustrate a hair-raising incident that happened to him on one mission: His crew was forced to jettison their bombs because of icing while they were on patrol. When they returned to base, the tower reported sheets of sparks coming from both sides of the plane during touchdown and roll-out. It seems the bombs had been frozen to the wing racks, and did not fall away until jarred loose by the landing, and the sparks were from the live bombs skidding alongside the plane! I used scratchboard for the art, which I thought would be good for a night subject...

Thank you for showing your nice illustration - and good choice on the scratchboard too! The details on the moon really pop out.
