Brad Pitt's WW2 tank movie 'Fury' review ...

Wed Jul 02, 2014 11:26 am

New trailer here. Looks interesting and yes there seem to be warbirds (or at least CGI looking warbirds) in it.

There's a lengthy thread with photos on this film here, with inpute from several people who worked on the movie, both behind and in front of the cameras: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/180776-fury/
As a former Army officer assigned to a heavy mech unit during my career, I raised an eyebrow over the ditance between the Sherman and the Tiger at the end of that trailer. Tank fights never get that close, especially with a tank with such a high-velocity gun as a Tiger had.
BTW, that's a real Tiger tank, the museum at Bovington loaned it for the filming, which makes it the only WW2 film ever to use a running Tiger tank. :supz:

Am I the only one that finds it pretty wild that Brad and Angelina, two of the hottest Hollywood actors, are doing war movies.

Brad with "Fury" and Angelina with "Unbroken"

Just food for thought

Didn't they use two Tiger tanks in Kelley's Heros, from the (then) Yugoslav Army?

No. Yugoslav army never operated Tigers, for starters they were then Communisit Bloc.

The "Tigers" in Both Kelly's Heroes and in Saving Private Ryan were Russian T-34s that were modified to look like Tigers. Look closely at the suspension and tracks and also how the turret is out of scale with the rest of the tank.

Not true - Communist / Eastern block countries used WW2 German armour well into the 1960's - Syria used Pzkpfw IV on the Golan Heights for example

Romanian army operated German Panther Ausf A, Ausf D and Ausf G, StuG III Ausf G, JgPz IV/70 tanks (1948 image)
Image

Czech army used WW2 German recovery panthers postwar

They had enough for use in war films
Image

French army used Panthers as well - much to the surprize of the US
Image

There is still tons of WW2 German small arms in storage in the FSU

Large numbers of WW2 German STG44 turned up in Syria during the fighting, all mint

On a sad note Louis Zamperini has passed away at age 97. He was scheduled to be this years Rose Bowl grand marshal. Quite a guy and quite a life.

Apologies for the thread drift. That's sad news! Years ago I sent a video camera along on the EAA B-17 tour so that the tour coordinators could try and record some of the amazing stories they come across out on the road. While in CA they interviewed a handful of WWII vets, including Louis Zamperini. At the time I had an external lavalier mic that for the camera that had to be turned on and off as it ran off a hearing aid type battery. The interviewer forgot to turn the mic on and there was zero audio for the recordings. It was the only time the program ever had a chance to interview Mr. Zamperini. I don't feel too bad about it as his story is pretty well preserved now, but it sure was a missed opportunity! RIP Mr. Zamperini. You deserve it!

The 'Kelly's Heroes' T-34 'Tiger' mockups were excellent for their time. For years, people would get into arguments over those being real Tiger tanks. Only when the film came out on VHS could people stop and get a good look to see what they really were. They were probably already like that when the film company showed up, as some have suggested they were previously built for a Yugo-made WW2 movie who's title escapes me right now, filmed soon before the KH movie was filmed.

Neat photo, never seen that before. I'd always known the French used German tanks way after WW2, and I agree it's odd how few people know that today. I remember reading once that the French seriously considered taking them to Indochina at one point.
People into WW2 Jeeps know that the French made what was in effect a replica WW2 Jeep by Hotchkiss for a long time after WW2 was over. While not well known by the public, they were used in military service in Europe as late as the 1990s! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotchkiss_M201
There apparently are two Panthers still displayed in French Army markings. One was last listed as being at Mourmelon-le-Grand:

As well as another painted just like it at Samur:

Milmart, I don't think Syria can be considered Eastern Bloc, and we are talking the 1970s for Kellys Heroes, not early post war. The Soviets soon got rid of any 'Western' equipment from their sphere of influence, whether it be aircraft or armour, as soon as possible.
None of those countries operated Tigers either.

P-51, to go further of topic, one of the French Panthers has, for better or worse, been returned to German markings
