Airport cafes and warbirds

Many people know about Flo's at Chino. How many other airports can you combine food and warbirds or interesting operations and aircraft. Let's hear about them.

Here in Minden NV we have the Taildragger Café at KMEV. It is right on the edge of the ramp fairly close to the intersection of the runways. When the Collings Foundation was here two weeks ago, the aircraft were right outside the café. We ate lunch there on Father's Day and two ATAC pilots were eating lunch and their L-39's were parked on the ramp outside. The food is good and they are busy at lunchtime. There is a bar overlooking the ramp and you can have a drink and play video poker if you want.
Warbirds are pretty hit or miss here. The 18 meter Nationals for the Soaring Society of America are going on now. There are always sailplane ops going on as Minden is one of the best locations in the world for soaring. When we have a fire in the area it gets busy with helos and SEATS. It is no longer a tanker base as that was cut in 2009 but a couple Neptunes and a BAE-146 are home based here.

Well..

We have the Windsock Bar & Grille here at the Sikorsky Memorial Airport here in Stratford / Bridgeport. Originally built as the forth structure at the airport, it was the home for the Airport Manager.


One of the earliest shots we have of the airport.

Before and during WWII it became the pilot shack and operations flight center. After the war it became a bar and it's been like that ever since.




Here it is after Hurricane Sandy hit.

The bar is a little "divey" but perfectly safe and cheap. But you'll want to watch your step around the gruff weather regulars. A ton of airplane memorabilia is littered throughout the bar. Great bar food. Simple but delicious. Cheap drinks too. Just a great airfield bar.

I'll vouch for the Windsock Bar and Grill - good food, friendly locals (at least when I was there) and relatively cheap. One place that I HIGHLY recommend is the Hangar One Steakhouse in Wichita, KS. A bit on the expensive side, but the food is spectacular and the decor is superb. Great place to stop and have a meal! http://www.hangaronesteakhouse.com/

If you're ever out in Seattle to visit the Museum of Flight, just a block or two down the street is Randy's Restaurant, which is chocked full of aviation decor, models, posters, books, warbird parts, etc. Great place. http://randys-restaurant.net/

A good "hole-in-the-wall" type place is Verna's Flight Line Restaurant in Millville, NJ. Located in one of the original base buildings (gun shack if I recall correctly) of Millville Army Airfield, a P-47 transition base, this place is inexpensive, but really good food. http://www.youdontknowjersey.com/2013/0 ... le-review/

The Felts Field Café in Spokane is worth checking out.
You overlook the GA transient area and its where the warbirds park during tours.

Models and photos galore...but nothing too neat.

The Spitfire Grill near the Pueblo Weisbrod Museum is pretty neat with all the pictures on the walls and stuff hanging from the ceiling. The food was good too.

Here at the Beaver County County Airport (KBVI), located just north of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we have two museums, Air Heritage Inc and the Vietnam Huey Pilots Association, and the Fly Girls Cafe.

The two museums share the north ramp while the cafe is in the main terminal off the airport's main ramp.

Fly Girls are very reasonably priced and their food is very good. They focus on sandwiches but they do specials during the week. They also have Pies, Cookies, Soups, Salads and others on their normal menu. They just celebrated their year anniversary yesterday with a large BBQ which they sold out of. They will being the BBQ once a month during the summer.

Tuesday is Taco (salad) Tuesday
Wednesday is Hamburger/Cheeseburger/Fries
Thursday is Hotdog/Chilidogs
Friday is Tuna salad day
