The making of the "Battle of Britain" movie ...

Thu Apr 24, 2014 10:29 pm

It's getting close to being that time of year again to reflect and remember those that became known as "The Few" ... So here once again is another look at making one of the very best "Genuine Warbird" movies ever created IMHO ... For those who haven't seen this little film, enjoy.

Mark, that was fun to watch, thank you for the link. :drink3:
I fear that history is being lost as even back then, some of the kids had no idea what the Battle of Britain was  , kids today haven't the faintest idea, nor do they give a rats A double s :axe:
Ah the dumbing down of America.....It is becoming more apparent that history will repeat itself.

I remember as a kid in grade school the student body walked to the local theater to see Battle of Britain. Later through a school book purchase program I bought a book titled Battle of Britain. When it arrived I found out the second half of the title was "The Making of the Film" or something similar. The whole book was devoted to how the movie came about and was filmed. I have been hooked on warbirds ever since.

Search for it on Amazon. There are about 30 copies (hardback, paperback, mass market paperback) for sale.

I think the title is The Battle of Britain: The Making of a Film. Four CAF pilots flew some of the Spanish 109s in the film. I'm just back from an air show and tired so I'll try and post more info tomorrow.

This is a newer book that tells the story of the film.
Battle of Britain: The Movie by Robert John Rudhall

Sadly Robert is no longer with us,but his enthusiasm for the film lives on in this book and the other one that he did, that was mainly photo's. Long out of print, but should be copies around.....

I'd love the book, either the first or second versions, but note the price on Amazon..$263.00!

This image is from The History of the Ghost Squadron in the section about the CAF's part in the making of The Battle of Britain movie.

From left to right are CAF Colonels Gerald Martin, Lefty Gardner, Connie Edwards and Lloyd Nolen. There are a lot more photos, mostly of the pilots, in the CAF archives.

I found copies of both books on http://www.abebooks.com/. The first, older book can be found in paperback pretty cheap while the hardbound were not too pricey. I found a signed copy of the newer book somewhat cheaper than the amazon price but the other copy listed was significantly higher than on amazon. Just FYI.

I have posted these before but this seems a proper thread in which to share them again. All of these photos were provided to me by the late Gerald Martin.

Great pics! Doesn't Connie Edwards still have a few of those Ha-1112's?

Yeah, he's got quite a number of Buchons from the film (as many as 10, according to past discussions here), including the two-seater. Some photos here if you scroll down to the bottom of the page (probably some of those same photos which had been posted here on WIX by Gary Austin): http://z15.invisionfree.com/72nd_Aircraft/ar/t2234.htm
