T-41B goes to paint Friday

Tue Apr 08, 2014 8:46 pm

I am flying the T-41B down to Bartow, Fl. this Friday April 11th for paint and glass. I have never used this paint shop before so I am a little nervous. He has painted a lot of Warbirds so I believe he knows what he is doing.

The antenna configuration on our T-41B will be as pictured on the SE Asia Bird. Towel Bar, FM Whip and VHF/UHF Blade on the dorsal spine. At one time the blade antenna was located on the cabin roof top left side immediately behind the towel bar but we are moving it to the tail cone.

We now have all of the military antennas and interior panels we needed to return the aircraft to it's full military interior. Don Nieser of Commodore Aerospace Corp has lots of Cessna O-2 stock and was able to supply me with the antennas and several large O-2 interior panels we can fit and trim for the T-41B interior.

What's the reason for relocating the antenna?

To avoid an "Antenna Farm" on top of the cabin. With the large FM towel Bar, FM Whip , GPS antenna it gets a little crowded and the tail cone is void of antennas.

The O-2 had everything mounted up there as the aircraft is a push pull and no large tail cone only booms. All of the photos I have show the large shark fin blade antenna located on the tail cone like a L-19. I have no idea why it had been mounted way up there on the cabin like a O-2, just another of those operational mysteries. :)

Steve,

News Flash! I just found a publication in my library that I had forgotten about- DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY TECHNICAL MANUAL TB 746-93-2: PAINTING AND MARKINGS OF ARMY AIRCRAFT. Its dated January 1971 and includes information on painting T-41s. I can scan the T-41 pages if you'd like. IT have to be later tonight.

Thanks Chappie very kind of you to think of us and offer. We already have it and I mailed everything last week to the paint shop so he could see what paint masks he would need. He shoots Jet Glo and I sent him the paint codes as well.

Best Regards,
Steve
