I learned a great deal about the Luftwaffe.

One of my favorite books, a really great story. Also take a look at Baa Baa Black Sheep written by WWII Marine ace Greg Boyington.

Yeah I read it too, its a great book. I found it to be very hard to put down. It also inspired me to start researching the Luftwaffe and not view them as mindless bloodthirsty drones following Hitlers every whim.

I never thought that, anymore than I knew my father, a B-17 pilot, wasn't a mindless drone following the orders of FDR.
Still, it's nice that we're at a point where we can look at our one time enemies as real people. I've never been a Luftwaffe fan/buff/worshiper but it's good to learn about the men who served in it.

The most surprising thing I learned in the book, is that German military officers were prohibited from being members of the Nazi party.

After you've finished 'A Higher Call' get out your excavation shovel and dig up a copy of 'HORRIDO!' by Col. Raymond Toliver and Trevor Constable puiblished by BANTAM (my copy was 1979) isbn 0-553-12663-6. (maybe AMAZON)
It has among other things bibliographies of aces from Hartman to Daehne with only 100 kills, scores of downed bombers by pilots, gruppen, organization, glossary-in 1979 bucks, about the best compendium I could obtain for $2.25

I liked the part when Fran's squadron leader threatened to shot down a JU-52 that was flying a prominent Nazi leader around. I wonder how the Jewish wives of some of the officers fared

I finished the book a few days ago. An awesome read and I highly recommend it. I never realized just how much the German fighters pilots depised Goering and his fat ego.

I remember there was a story about a German general who was of Jewish decent and the only thing thing that saved him was Karl Donitz stepping in so I doubt the pilots nor the pilots wives fared well.

I have the book on my shelf waiting to be read. I just finished Lone Survivor and now I'm reading RED EAGLES: America's Secret MiGs.

Glad to hear HIGHER CALL is a good book.

I just ordered a copy of "A Higher Call". Looking forward to reading it!

Another book that I enjoyed immensely was "Roseanna's Reply". I couldn't put it down!
