I am hitting a brick wall trying to find the correct FS number for the gloss olive drab and white used on Army Adminstrative aircraft in the 1960's as pictured in this photo taken in Germany. According to the manuals the 1968 Olive Drab is 14087 but this color is no longer available on the FS 395 color server
http://colorserver.net/The 1984 Olive Drab 14088 is not even close to the correct shade. If anyone has used any paint company to match this Olive Drab I would greatly appreciate that information. I can use Sherwin Williams, Dupont or any other as long as the color is correct. I talked with Sherwin Williams today but without a FS color or part numbers from a previous order they cannot help. This 1960s gloss OD is turning out to be very difficult to match and we are getting ready to paint the Army T-41B.
Thanks for your help,

That's because the FS specification for this color was discontinued. The nearest match now is 14084, or perhaps 34086
Here is a history of this color:
http://www.mil-mod.nl/html/featod.htmlCompanies that make colors for model kits may have something close...you might try color matching them:

Try this site (I'll break it up in case the software won't publish web addresses) www. scalemodeldb .com / paint / modelmaster. (do your own editing and put it in 'FAVES')
You can switch around from manufacturers to manufacturers charts and get a fair approximation of the color you are looking for.

Then take that number Modelmaster f.s. number to your paint jobber house and ask them do a 'drop by drop' of 'close to it' shades then you can decide-by the way you are looking for gloss not gloss drab, that's oximoronic it's like Roseanne RosannaDana said 'it's either one thing or the other'

Thanks guys, I appreciate your responses. I was hoping someone out here had already painted an aircraft with these correct colors and I could use their part numbers to match up. Having done the custom match a sample process in the past I have found it to be problematic but it may turn out to be my only option.
The 14084 does indeed look the best of existing FS options but is more brown than the 14087.
Thanks again
Steve

One caveat: I wouldn't judge any paint color by an online sample or photograph, if you have a choice in the matter. Your best bet is to find a physical example and match it with a color swatch book. (FS, Pantone, whatever)

Which is why I recommended a 'drop by drop' visual check at the jobber.

Made me go look-try to locate U.S. Army TB 746-93-2 sec. XI pages 7 to 32. The non cammo green call out is fs 14110. the notes on what to paint and where to mask are on pages 8-252A thru 8-252H (NEVER throw ANY references away!!!!)

Back in the '80s the local USAR unit at my airport had a U-3 and a U-8 painted in the gloss OD and white schemes. they kept some paint around and while I don't recall any numbers, I do remember it was Imron or Alumi-Grip (Imron I really think) and not an FS number. Maybe this helps.

Have you checked with the Museum at Ft. Rucker?

Hey Bryan, I have found the FT. Rucker museum to be unresponsive with regard to any requests regarding paint or assisting in the tracing of the history of the aircraft. Several emails have resulted in no response at all.

We used an actual piece of WW II fabric from a Stinson L-5 flap that was a depot item and not faded to match the colors for the O-58A built November 1941 we are restoring. The photo shows the fabric with the paint sample we ended up using.
Would be nice if we had something tangible to go by on this aircraft built 11-10-66.

Is the same color used on Marine One?

In the 595C fan deck I am looking at there is FS34086 and FS34088 (flats). FS34084 seems too dark to me. I am not sure if a paint company can mix a gloss from the flat number specs, but you might ask.
On the fed-std site or color server site, they list FS14087 (gloss) as having a RGB hex Code of 3C341F. Hope it helps.

It looks a little more green to me in some newer close up photos I pulled up, but I did notice some older photos sure looked close.

Thanks for that info, I wonder what info is included in the hex code.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I just received this information from John with the Lone Star Flight Museum. We are good to go.
