Planes of Fame Airshow, 2014

Tue Feb 04, 2014 5:57 am

Haven't seen a thread for this show, yet some participants have already been announced:

-F-22 Raptor Team and Heritage Flight
-The Horsemen (3x P-51)
-Sanders Family Sea Fury
-Oracle Challenger
-Tumbling Bear

Looks to be a good show. Anyone going? Anyone have any rumours or whispers they've heard regarding this show?

I'm going, but i haven't heard anything beyond what's on their Facebook page. But this will be my first west coast airshow, so it will be mostly aircraft I haven't seen before so it will be awesome no matter who shows up or doesn't.

My Dad and I have been going off and on since about 1968, we'll be there again this year! The best show was from about 1980 or 81? All those B-24's, B-17's and a B-29!

Anyone else remember when Chino was wide open and you could explore all the hangers and lots without being told to "go away"?

The '80s shows were nonstop action. Everything from Stearmans to jets. The people working the show had more fun than the guests, and the guests had a GREAT time!

Lots of warbird projects going on at the airport in the county hangars then too. Now they are mostly at the established shops.

The active effort to lock people out of the airport came in the mid-1980s. Aviation started to decline around then IMHO. The airspace started getting pretty complicated too. Times were great during the controllers strike. Tower closed at 5 and it didn't get dark until 8! Now you just about need an IFR clearance to take off.

So now who else can I offend?

MAN! I was all excited seeing the Raptor as an announced demo - but I checked the ACC site and nothing has been posted by the USAF/ACC in regard to the demo schedule . . guess we have to hope the POF folks have an inside track!

Maybe this time I'll get to see the all time T-6 project!

My first PoF show was in 1986 and I've missed only a few between then and now. While I still immensely enjoy the show these days there is no comparison to Chino in the '80s. It was a whole different world back then and, unfortunately, that era is gone forever. I'm very glad to have had opportunity to experience it though and those are my "good old days" for sure. Just wish I had taken a LOT more pictures!

Just thought I would start with this show, but I hope to visit many more places following this one, hope to arrange some flying on a B-17 as well. I spent many years flying on Sally B and and the others during the Memphis Belle remake.

And the year before that at Cable, and the year before that as well.

The B-17 "Sentimental Journey" will be at the airshow and will be selling rides several before and after the show.

The Wings of Freedom trio comprising B-17, B-24 and TP-51C are in California before and after the Planes of Fame show. At the moment, they have bookings at several airports up until the 28 April, then after that the Monday after the airshow. I wonder if they will be at the airshow?

It would be nice for Collings Foundation to play ball at an airshow once in awhile. Back in "the day" they use to frequent waaaaay more shows.
