Aircraft display sign ideas?

Sat Dec 07, 2013 9:56 am

I would like to make up an info sign to prop in front of my dad's Tiger Moth at airshows and fly-ins, and am looking for ideas. Something weatherproof, that would fit in the baggage compartment, and I'd like to put a couple of photos on it, plus the usual text of history of the type and of that particular airplane. Does Kinkos or Office Depot do that kind of stuff? How do you go about laying out something like that on your PC? Any input will be helpful-

Talk to a local sign shop. They should be able to print something on vinyl and affix it to a weatherproof backing, such as plexiglass. They can also do the layout for you if you give them a sketch.

I've had car show signs made at our local FedEx Office location. They printed the vinyl and affixed it to foam board (I wasn't worried about weatherproof-ness because I don't do car shows in the rain!). I did my own layout using MS Word and put the file on a thumb drive.

I, too, am looking for ideas...not for the sign ...have most of that designed ready to be printed. But I need a sturdy but not overly large, light weight stand/easel/whatever that can be carried in plane and will withstand surface winds and remain standing. Dean. your ideas for printing are great !!!!

A neat idea, but they look to be more an inside setup and you may wind up chasing them across the ramp at an airshow or flyin. A couple of loops of bungee cord for over the prop, a collapsable dome tent firbreglass rod and a couple 1/2 gallon plastic milk jugs to thread through a loop in the bottom would work better in breezy situations.
A few years ago I watched a KC-10 turn and blow a heavy vinyl 30X30 sales tent half way across KPAE and a dumpster into a Forces Canada S2F.

Back before Van's Aircraft's volume took off, Van used to take his RV-4 to airshows. The "display" was an assemblage of vinyl covered foamboard he set on the wing. It reminded me of the folding cover for an iPad. It could be flattened for transport, or velcroed into a display with a triangular cross section. Two of the three faces had airplane and company information, and the other big side was the base. He used a bag of tools laid inside the display as a weight to keep it from blowing around.

I had CostCo do a vinyl sign board for my jeep. It's weather proof, and though mine won't fit in the baggage area of a Tiger Moth, they might have smaller versions available.
