Being former Army myself, I'm reminded of something Dr Atwater at the Ordnance Museum in Aberdeen told me once:

Without speculating on the veracity of any of the stories mentioned one of the fascinating things about studying history is how stories come to light years later. While millions of individual experiences are undoubtedly lost to history everyday there are many yet to be discovered in archives, letters and memoirs all over the world from every conflict in history.
