Flying Sikorsky UH-34 donated to NMMC

Fri Nov 08, 2013 8:05 pm

A lovingly restored Sikorsky UH-34 will be making its last flight soon and it will take its place inside the National Museum of the Marine Corps. Bureau Number 150570 was returned to flying status about 2007 but, I imagine the man hours to maintain it finally caught up with the organization - too bad.

Sad to see this flyer get grounded. They tried very hard to keep it up, but bookings just weren't paying the bills. :(

I was at the Marine Corps Museum's parking lot Friday afternoon, November 8 to see the UH-34D arrive on its next to final flight from Long Island. It was a nice day for the arrival. It arrived just before 2:00 PM and landed on a grass area adjacent to the parking area. It was scheduled for one more short hop to the restoration facility on Marine Corps Base Quantico at about 4:00 PM.

Sad that its flying days are over, but it has been donated to a good location. I had seen it fly previously at the MCAS Cherry Point air show in May 2007 and Thunder Over Michigan in July 2007.

Sad to see it grounded, but glad it will be displayed at a prominent and appropriate location.

A great video, Sid; thanks for sharing. I read the UH-34 cost $1500 an hour to operate and that, sadly, there just wasn't enough airshow and donor support for them to continue operating. As you said, sad. I'm glad it has gained such a prestigious permanent home though.

Hmmmmnn...the video worked for me and a nice one too! The-34's made such a wonderful growling racket when they flew overhead....no nimby should be deprived of that joy! Pity to lose another flyer, but it's great to hear she'll be displayed inside.
