This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Actually, this is the Northrop N-1M, one of the single seat prototype lying wings. Only one of this model was built and this image was probably taken sometime after May of 1942 judging from the style of the National Insignia star on the wing. It still exists in the NASM collection.

Tks for the info & data. Did he use the engine support structure as vertical stabs??

My grandfather's cousin worked for Northrup on the YB version of the flying wing. He told my Dad that it was a joy to work on and watch fly.

That wasn't the purpose, but I'm sure they acted that way. The engines were high to keep the props off the ground during takeoff and landing.

The wing tips were adjustable on the ground and could be canted down in an anhedral to test the feasibility of the design.

Northrop survivors include the N1M in the NASM, the N9MB (in Chino) and the JB-1 Bat (last seen at the Western Museum of Flight).
http://wmof.com/jb1.htmPOF in Chino also has a Horten IV glider on display.
The last YB-49 was scrapped at Ontario Airport in the late 1950s I believe.

I would also consider the Vought Pancake and Flapjack flying wing designs, no?

Perhaps similar in ways for sure .... I find both ideas to be interesting and quite visionary for the times.

Good day!
Tks. Nice shots of the YB-49 Flying wings. 2 & 4 engines concepts for better performance. Is it true that all these wings had low radar signatures??
p.s What was the final outcome of the MX-334 concept?? I'd have volunteer to have gone for a spin in that one! I do not know about the flying pancakes!!

Being the 'Northrop Brat' that I am (Dad worked for them for years, as did an Aunt) I have always loved the Flying Wings!!!
So seeing the PoF N-9MB at El Cajon many years ago was like nothing I can put into words.
I just hope I get to see that P-61 fly some day.
As for the lack of tails on the piston powered wings-
I always thought it had to do with the use of counter-rotating props.
Is that not what let them get away with no tails?

This one is YRB-49A, note 4 engines in rear and 1 pod just visible in front.
