B-17 Tail section at the Smithsonian

Sat Sep 14, 2013 11:20 am

Does anyone know if this piece came from a specific B-17, or is it just a replica? It's displayed at the National Museum of American History, on the Mall in DC.

The placard mentions it's on loan from NASM.

It did not go with the remainder of the plane because the Smithsonian wanted to retain it for the display in which it now sits. The folks at the Natl Museum of the Mighty Eighth AF were aware ahead of time the B-17 would not have a tail turret on it. They really didnt mind because for years they wanted a B-17 anf they finally got one.
