Restoration Progress Aeronca O-58A

Mon Sep 09, 2013 8:25 pm

Fuselage is in primer and two coats have been wet sanded. We will shoot one more primer coat which will also be sanded and then the Olive Drab will Go on.

An overhauled A-65 is ready to install, complete with new millennium cylinders and slick magnetos.

This aircraft has been in storage and not flown since 1953. When completed 42-7796 it will be the sole surviving O-58A left of the twenty built by Aeronca. 42-7797 is in storage at the Ft. Rucker Museum, a basket case.

We started restoring the aircraft 18 months ago and still have another 12 to 18 months to go. We have now located all of the original radios, reel antenna and other items to complete the restoration.

Nice.
But how can it be the "sole surviving" O-58 when the next one down the line is at Ft. Rucker?
Did you perhaps mean "sole airworthy"?

You are correct the only one left in airworthy condition.. There are no airworthy Piper O-59s left. Sadly These early "Grasshoppers" are all but gone.
