Grumman TBF flies at Tillamook

Tue Sep 03, 2013 11:52 am

I visited the museum at Tillamook, OR last Friday and went for a ride in their Stearman. While directly over the airport, the pilot pointed below and we could see the Grumman TBF taking off. I was later told that it was her first flight in about 19 years. We were able to stay inside of her climb for awhile and got a nice look as she gained altitude. She made several passes over the airport before landing. From the conversation, it sounded like she did really well with no real serious issues.

Looks like another active flying machine will be in the skies again. This is a great place to visit. They are really cordial and try to accommodate the public. I can't speak well enough about my 3 visits there.

PS I just got corrected by an anonymous ? that TBM is a non-Grumman machine and TBF
is a Grumman. Sorry for the error.

Very good! I like the early scheme on that TBM.

Who here hasn't been excited about the Tillamook collection becoming airworthy again? I only hope that these aircraft continue to stay operational after the move to Madras.

I know those of you without facebook will hate to hear this but.... if you are on facebook look up a gent by the name of Lyle Jansma, he appears to have become at least the unofficial photographer for the collection.

I thought about that and would have liked to take a borrowed digicam along, but purposely left it in the vehicle. Had asked if I could fly some & they were amenable. The pilot flew us up from Tillamook, past Garibaldi to Rockaway Beach where the steam train lays over and I took us back.

Once back on the ground though, I got the camera out and captured one low pass as well as her taxiing by on the way back to the hangar. That R-2600 sounded great.
