American Wheel Identification

Tue Aug 06, 2013 3:49 am

Have come across a pair of wheels that seem to be from a US aircraft. Not convinced they are mains but perhaps tail wheels? They were found on a local farm, the only US aircraft I know were broken up on the airfield near by were B-17 and B-24 (RAF Lend Lease).

The wheels have

Serial No: 38276
1042N1254

and BF Goodrich tyres are fitted, no tread patterns hence the thought that they may be tail wheels.

Any thoughts?

What would help is photos and measurements, rough is ok of the OD of the tire and the rim edge to edge.
Also does the tire have a marking that would give the type of tire? It would be something like 27SC or a number- number. S/Ns don't help any.
Is there a name on the rim like Hayes or a logo type mark with a letter?
Is there a brake drum on one side or possibly a set of square steel keys or slots in a recessed circular area on one side? The key way slots would be from the edge toward the middle of the rim arranged around the OD of the recessed area and this is where the brake, whether drum or multiple disc, would interface with the rim. On some bombers the rim would have a brake on both sides of the same wheel so this recessed area could be on both sides.
Good luck on your quest.
