Smashing a Sabre (1958)

Tue Jul 30, 2013 12:11 am

While looking through archives of the University of Arizona yearbooks for car pictures I found something unusual... Remember when schools would drag in an old car and let the kids beat on it with sledgehammers to raise money for the school or a charity? Well, in 1958, they took it a step further:

F-87, huh? I guess UA had no aeronautics courses back then. This looks like an F-86D and already pretty stripped. Too bad we can't see a serial; this was the only photo.

Yeah...and those F-87s were hard to come by back in them days!

Mudge the nomenclaturist

I'm not sure what smashing a jet fighter (even an old F-87) has to do with a "Gay 90s" theme. I guess no one was willing to donate an 1896 Benz to be smashed.
