Volk Field - Camp Douglas Wisconsin National Guard Museum

Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:35 pm

I made a pit stop at my old stomping grounds when I was in the Wisconsin National Guard to take some pictures of the aircraft on display. It was nice to see them all brought together in one area versus scattered all around the base like they used to be several years ago.

The museum curator said they have a person who cares for the planes and that he is from Georgia. He paints one plane a year on a rotation. This year they are supposed to paint the F-4 Phantom and it's supposed to be in a Vietnam era camouflage. He is doing a fine job and they look a lot better than they did when I was a regular there.

Enjoy!

Those airplanes looked cared for. Even if he is only painting one a year he is still doing better than I am!

Thanks for posting those photos.

The Huey is with the tanks and artillery pieces, look behind the tail of the Cobra. I did not get a photograph of the KC-97. But, it's on the corner of Madison and Wisconsin.

A nice collection but the P-51 somehow needs to be rescued from the climate there. Thanks for the pics.

Interesting collection, tastefully displayed, and it looks like they're all well cared for. The Mustang looks a little strange with the P-47-ish gun barrels sticking out of the wings, but that's really just a minor nit. Kudos to the folks responsible for the upkeep on these classics!

It would be interesting to see the internal condition of the Mustang.
If it's in good shape, the govt. should sell it and replace it with a fiberglass model (like that's gonna happen). :)

Saw the Huey after I posted & scrolled the pic sideways :) That's a former 129th AHC bird apparently, Anyone in the area want to check on the serial #? Should be 66-16171? More pics would be appreciated :)

It has history with 129th, 572nd, 361st, 52nd, 604th, 119th & 79th in Vietnam.
