Olathe Naval Air Station and Harpoons

Sun Jun 30, 2013 3:23 pm

Looking for more information, photos, of the Harpoons that served at NAS Olathe, Kansas. We are trying to locate as many people, civilian or military, that were affiliated with the base or Harpoons. The Warbird Warrior Foundation, and the Airline History Museum in Kansas City are together looking for this information to put together a display and draw up an historical account of the nearby Naval Air Base during and after WWII. Thanks!

I was just at the Topeka Combat Air Museum this past Tuesday. They had a couple of glass displays dedicated to Olathe NAS, with pictures and memorabilia. Definitely had pictures of Harpoons, Corsairs, etc. Sorry, didn't get any pictures of this part of the museum! Just some info that might be helpful.

Gary/K Code Folks:

Good Day!

One for your archives. Olathe Naval Reserve F4U-4 Buno 97156, ground crew & unid officer. c. 1960s. Via Navy Archives/Wix. Have a few more "K" codes that will post along the way. Olathe NAS was rich in Naval history!

Thanks! I have seen a picture of a Poon with the big K on the tail before. Funny, but I am in Topeka at this moment....picking up a load of dog food for the hungry dogs in Fontana, Ca. , but alas the museum is closed, or I would be heading there now. You are right Zorro7, a lot of history at Olathe. There used to be a Skyray and a Cutlass mounted on poles S.E. of the airport off of I-35. I crawled thru my first B-17 at the old air station...one of Bill Dempsey's tankers, back in mid 70's.
