CAF birds for sale?

Sat Jun 29, 2013 7:15 am

Something going on with the CAF?

Seems like I have seen an unusual amount of warbirds with CAF logos on them advertised for sale. Is that normal?

A lot of 'member-owned' aircraft are being defaced with the hideous 'tramp stamp' these days, so they may not be CAF-owned aircraft as such that you are seeing advertised for sale.

There is a C-47 and O-2 for sale that are both owned by the CAF itself.

I believe they were from a midwestern branch, like in Illinois or Wisconsin, or that general area.

O-2

C-47
no longer listed, so i dont know if it sold or if the advertisement just ended on its own. They wanted $139,000 i believe and was from the same branch as the O-2. It was pretty rough looking though.

Right now on Courtesy there is an O-2A and an Iskra jet up for sale. There was also a C-47 recently listed, can't remember if it was on Courtesy or not.

Now that you mention it, I think I did see the C-47 listed with Courtesy for a month or so, but the listing was pulled.

Ex-SoCal wing finance guy here.

The operational cost(s) of these airframes is as such that they have to pay for there own lunch. If an airworthy airframe sits too long the national organization will take them away anyway. The idea is that the CAF flies the birds, they don't just sit in the hanger. As such if an airframe does not bring in the needed revenue to continue it's operations it could become a sellable asset. We had an airframe that was drawing so much capital from the wing we just could not afford her and off she went.

Best,

Jason

Here is the CAF Great Lakes Wing C-47B for sale last month. And we were making money with this plane. Had some bad luck at the end with its mechanics.

C-47 is no longer for sale. O-2 is. Iskra jet is (had been donated to the CAF but no unit wanted it)...just for talking points, there are more airplanes in the CAF now than at any other time in its history, and more than 80% of them fly, most ever in flying status. And, yes, I'm not a fan of the "tramp stamp," but the visibility/identification of the CAF now is much greater than it has been, so I will tolerate it.
