H-19 in Korea 1956 Photos

Tue Jun 04, 2013 9:07 pm

I found these in a bunch of slides at a tag sale. They're marked 1956 "Helicopter landing on football field".
No other info.

Oh! So close and yet so far! I have the data plate for 51-14271 - twenty numbers after this one - and have never found a photograph of it. I'm almost wondering if your two photos might be of different birds as the one from below appears to have the nose number 74 which might translate to 51-14274. I'm sure Sid will chime in and give you what history he has for 51-14251. What a great fine! Thanks for sharing.

Here's two more from the same sequence. I don't have anymore H-19, but I do have two blurry shots of an H-34 as marine One landing on the White House lawn.

Nice Mark! Way better image of an H-19 than those slides I found!

Great photos, almost as much fun as watching Battle Taxi on TCM a couple of months back.
(BTW: their H-19As had "B" serials. Anyone have a explanation for that?)

Thanks, Mark! That's the image that I Photo-shopped, changing the last 2 into a 1, and is now matted and framed with the data plate. Still on the hunt!

Interesting how the dark black shadow created by the blade behind the pilot's position manages to neatly go around and completely miss the bar on the national insignia.

Great find Jerry,

Information and pictures of the US Army's H-19's are hard to come by, but this example seems to have spent most of it's time in Korea. It was delivered new from Sikorsky to the US Army on the 21st of July 1952, probably sent to Korea shortly after. It is known to have served with the 38th Artillery Brigade before being sent home from Korea in June 1962. Then assigned to the Property Office at Fort Benning, then to Atlanta before being struck off charge, possibly as scrap in February 1963.
