Lulu Belle's first flights from North Weald

Sun Jun 02, 2013 1:00 pm

The Hangar 11 Collection P-40 has been rolled out today in its new colour scheme which portrays Lulu Belle, flown by 2nd Lieutenant Philip Adair from the 80th Fighter Group – the Burma Banshees – part of the 89th Fighter Squadron based at Nagaghuli in India during 1944.

It was great to see the new scheme after all the hard work that has gone into researching and applying it - very different from the usual shark's teeth!

Here are a few pics from Ops 1 during the two sorties today - one a display for the Collection's supporters and the second an air-to-air photo shoot with a Yak 52.

Different Lulu Belle Mark. I'll set you a little challenge, just for fun, to see how many photos you can find of Adair's first Lulu Belle, a P-40N-1, so visually identical to Peter's P-40M.

Nice photos Trevor, thanks for posting them here.

Hi Mike, here's what the LIFE photo info states, Correct you are as it's his 2nd Lulu Belle?

"Lulu Belle II" #44
Curtiss P-40N-5-CU Warhawk
s/n 42-105xxx
89th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group, 10th Air Force
Pilot: Lt. Philip R. Adair

Not to take away from the outstanding photos posted of the new paint scheme, but I love a good bet. Am I close now?

These are the shots that were presumably used as reference for the scheme, from the same source you found Mark.

I also feel the scheme is a great choice.

But as far as Lulu Belle being the only warbird with whitewalls: Umm... no.

Yes those are the photos we used - and so detailed and useful to re-create the scheme 70 years later. Thank you for the nice comments - much appreciated after a lot of hard work by the Hangar 11 team.
