Montréal Airshow 1987 - Blast from the past!

Sun Apr 14, 2013 4:05 pm

I bought a competent scanner to digitize film today, and one of the first project I completed was the pictures from the 1987 Montréal airshow.

Great photos, but if the Lanc was there it couldn't have been 1987. C-GVRA first flew in September 1988.

Oh, thanks for the heads up.

I will check in the various aircraft's logbooks when I'm at the airport, I'll get the exact date.

Looks a bit like Hamilton. Perhaps the Lancaster's first official flight on September 24, 1988. The Lancaster had no turret back then and the Spitfire and Hurricane did fly with it that day.

Yep, that sure does look like Mt.Hope...the radar soccer ball on the gantry is right where it oughta be, and the superb weather matches conditions on 24 September 1988, when CWH expected two or three thousand people might turn out for the Lanc's debut but twenty thousand turned up instead...Highway 6 was something of a parking lot! I have always seen that utterly magical day as the apogee of CWH.

Pictures were in a set with Montreal airshow pictures, I will have to dig around a bit.

I really miss seeing that Spitfire. Cliff Robertson used to have it hangared at the Air Zoo when I was little. I remember seeing it fly once when I was about six years old. Cool pics!

That was a pretty amazing day.
One of the things that will stick with me was George Sobering wearing his uniform (he flew Lancs) and delivering a very moving and emotional speech.
"....you're damm right we'll remember them!..." seared into my mind for ever.

You and me both! It was cool having Mr. Robertson's Spit and Bf-108 there. I don't think I saw the Spit fly after it had a nose-over that chewed up the prop in the mid-90s. I've got a pic somewhere of it sitting in the shop with a shredded propeller.
