Was this a helo or tank setup?

It could be out of a helo, but it looks more like an R-985 set up for an M4, or similar tank. If I am wrong it won't be the first time today.

I remember seeing a similar set up that came out of some kind of boat. Maybe a landing craft.

Nope, that's a 7 cylinder 250 HP Continental out of an M3 Stuart tank or an LVT.

The valve covers look just like the ones that were on my Stearman.

Correct, sure looks to be 7 cylinders. Looks like its already set to run as you can kind of make out a instrument panel. Very common in the M3 or LVT. A ugly machine the LVT is but I have a fellow club member here in VT with a M3 and it sounds sweet thumping around on tracks in a field or in town

7 cylinders and rear pushrod tubes. Sure seems like a W-670 to me.
