On Behalf of Lowell

Tue Mar 05, 2013 6:36 pm

Hello fellow WIX members,
This is Joseph Thompson, posting on behalf of my father Lowell.

My Dad, with heavens ticket in hand, took flight to the eternal realms of Glory, Saturday evening, March 2nd.

For those who did not know, Dad was diagnosed with a terminal cancer in May of '12. He had continued to post here, and in other places throughout his battle. These forums were a source of great Joy to him! I'll be anxious to hear from those of you who knew dad best, as I have not been a frequent follower here at WIX, but intend to be in the future.

Dad most enjoyed his devoted research to his father Lloyd's military aviation career, particularly in the 301st BG B-17's in WWII, and the 22nd BG with '29's in Korea.

He was also very knowledgeable in post-war Unlimited air racing, and specifically Mustangs and Cobras. He loved to tease others in trivia, and pop-quiz's in relation to aircraft identity, and history.

Once, standing beside Dad, another challenged him to quote from the top of his head, the s/n, Registrations, and history of any civilian owned P-51 in history, at which point another P-51 owner took the challenge, and proceeded to quiz Dad. To the astonishment of all around, Dad flawlessly answered from his memory, the complete civil history of the aircraft in question, which left this challengers in awe. I can attest to perhaps hundreds of similar times, when I personally asked him a question, and he could give satisfying answer without ever referring to a book, magazine, internet post, or other reference, for he simply had that information memorized! He was a genius of air-racing history as well, and leaves behind a library of references and materials, which is probably not equaled.

He took me to my first air races at Reno in 1990. I was 3 years old, and against my mothers better judgement, I was allowed to go. Sure enough he lost me! With the help of Unlimited race pilot Erin Rheinschild, I was located gawking at Lefty's P-38, and dad was able to return home with son in hand, to continue living in harmonious marriage!

Dad passed without the least bit of fear of his eternal destiny. He would want all here to know of his trust in Jesus Christ, and his confidence in that free gift of God, which is eternal life. Dad took his ticked to heaven in 1968, freely, by trusting in Jesus alone.

I would like to hold a live stream, in the coming weeks, sharing some stories, and photos, and discussing Dad life. This will be tailored to all of his friends in the aviation community, and I hope you all can join me. Will post details in due time.

Thank-you all for being such great friends to Dad over the years!

Joseph: Sorry for your families lost. I always enjoyed your father's posts. It sounds like you know he is in a better place where the pain of cancer is gone.

Hello Joseph and thank you kindly for allowing us here on WIX to share in your loss. We wish it was not so, but we can also find solace in knowing your father no longer has to suffer and is very much at peace now. Just so you know it takes quite a man to have the courage to post of such a personal loss and even though it may not feel that way at the moment, you have much to be proud of in your actions. You can find your own peace in knowing your father is very proud of you as he always has been.

This morning I wrote the post below for the loss of another WIX member and dear friend to many here. I feel it to be very appropriate for you as well.

Joseph, sometimes when we are alone we ask ourselves questions, 'am I a good person, have I lived a good life, have I done enough. Have I been good to my family and friends' When we think this way most of us tend to struggle with honest answers to the man in the mirror. I can assure you your father has looked in that mirror many times. I bet he has seen a smile more times than not. Mourn his passing for but a moment, celebrate his life forever.

I too enjoyed your father's posts, he will be missed here.

Condolences to you and your family.

Mark

My condolences for your loss.

Scrolling through your photos I saw N210D. I was fortunate enough to hop a ride in that Mustang.

Thoughts and prayers to you and yours

Joseph,

Sorry to hear that your father has passed. I’m glad I was able to meet him. I remember good times talking to him at our campsite at Reno. Your right, your father had an encyclopedic memory when it came to air racers. I remember buying you and your brother’s drawings of air racers in the stands when you were barely in elementary school!

Give Benjamin my best.

Joseph,

Sadly, I never had the privilege of meeting your father face-to-face. We did, however, e-mail quite a bit about his love for Timm N2Ts and his continued search for a certain P-63!

In all our dialogue, he never once let on about what rough shape he was in physically. What WAS evident though, was that your life has been blessed by having had such a fine, Christian gentleman for a father who obviously loved his family a great deal.

I am so very sorry for your loss and hurt, but so very happy for your dad whose hurts are now over for eternity.

Blessings to you and your family,

Dan Kell
